The Read For Pixels 10th Anniversary AMA Series
The Pixel Project is proud to present 15 special AMAs sessions on r/Fantasy (for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror authors) and r/RomanceBooks (for Romance authors) throughout August and September 2023 as part of the 10th Anniversary of the Read For Pixels campaign.
The AMA sessions on r/Fantasy are also held to mark the 10th year of our long-running partnership with r/Fantasy.
- Posting Time: The time when the author posts their AMA introduction/bio
- Start Time: The time when the author begins answering AMA questions.
- “24 hours”: The author will log in every few hours over the 24 hours following the posting time to answer questions in batches.
Taking Part in Read For Pixels AMA Sessions
It’s easy peasy once you have a Reddit account:
- Go to r/Fantasy (for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror AMAs) or r/RomanceBooks (for Romance AMAs). Log into your Reddit account there.
- Scroll down the list of forum topics until you see the AMA with the title that includes the author’s name and mentions The Pixel Project and/or Read For Pixels.
- Click to access the AMA, then type in your questions for the author. The author will answer your questions either during the designated start time starting 7pm CT/8pm ET (U.S. authors) or at intervals throughout the day (authors outside the U.S.).
- Due to the “just in time” nature of AMAs (which are posted the day of the event), please visit the sub-reddit (r/Fantasy or r/RomanceBooks) stated under the bios of participating Read For Pixels authors below after 10am U.S. Eastern Time on the day of the event to leave your questions for the author of the day.

Anna Smith Spark
ANNA SMITH SPARK is the author of the Empires of Dust grimdark epic fantasy series The Court of Broken Knives, The Tower of Living and Dying and The House of Sacrifice; the standalone A Woman of the Sword; and A Sword of Bronze and Ashes, book one of her new folk horror high fantasy series The Remaking of This World Ruined. ANNE BISHOP is a New York Times award-winning author of the Novels of the Others and the Black Jewels series. When she’s not writing, Anne enjoys gardening and reading–and pondering how to get her imaginary friends into more trouble. Her most recent novel is The Queen’s Price.
Anne will be doing a special Read For Pixels 10th Anniversary AMA session on r/Fantasy on August 29th 2023 (Tuesday).
CARRIE VAUGHN’S work includes the Philip K. Dick Award winning novel Bannerless, the New York Times Bestselling Kitty Norville urban fantasy series, over twenty novels and upwards of 100 short stories, two of which have been finalists for the Hugo Award. Her most recent novel, Questland, is about a high-tech LARP that goes horribly wrong and the literature professor who has to save the day. An Air Force brat, she survived her nomadic childhood and managed to put down roots in Boulder, Colorado.

A native of the Mississippi Delta, Charlaine Harris has lived her whole life in various southern states. Her first book, a mystery, was published in 1981. After that promising debut, her career meandered along until the success of the Sookie Stackhouse novels. Now all her books are in print, and she is a very happy camper. She is married and has three children.

Jim C. Hines
JIM C. HINES is the author of the Magic ex Libris series, the Princess series of fairy tale retellings, the humorous Goblin Quest trilogy, and the Fable Legends tie-in Blood of Heroes. He also won the 2012 Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer. His latest novel is Terminal Peace, book three in the humorous science fiction Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse trilogy. He lives in mid-Michigan with his family.

Julie E. Czerneda
Award-winning science fiction and fantasy author/editor JULIE E. CZERNEDA was inducted into the CSFFA Hall of Fame in 2022. Published by DAW Books, NY, her latest release is standalone science fiction novel To Each This World. Julie is represented by Sara Megibow of KT Literary.

JULIET MARILLIER was born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, and now lives in Western Australia. Her historical fantasy novels and short stories are published internationally and have won numerous awards. She is the author of twenty-four novels and two collections of short fiction. Her most recent series is Warrior Bards. Juliet loves mythology, folklore and strong, complex characters. When not writing, Juliet is kept busy by a small crew of rescue dogs.

LEE MURRAY is a multi-award-winning author-editor from Aotearoa-New Zealand. Her work includes military thrillers, the Taine McKenna Adventures, supernatural crime-noir series The Path of Ra (with Dan Rabarts), and debut collection Grotesque: Monster Stories. She is proud to have co-edited Black Cranes: Tales of Unquiet Women with Geneve Flynn.

MARIE BRENNAN is a former anthropologist and folklorist who shamelessly pillages her academic fields for inspiration. She recently misapplied her professors’ hard work to The Game of 100 Candles and the short novel Driftwood. As half of M.A. Carrick, she is also the author of the Rook and Rose epic fantasy trilogy, beginning with The Mask of Mirrors.

Mary Robinette Kowal
MARY ROBINETTE KOWAL is the author of The Spare Man, Ghost Talkers, The Glamourist Histories series, and the Lady Astronaut Universe. She is part of the award-winning podcast Writing Excuses and a four-time Hugo Award winner. Her short fiction appears in Uncanny, Tor.com, and Asimov’s. Mary Robinette, a professional puppeteer, lives in Nashville.

MAYA RODALE is the best-selling and award-winning author of funny, feminist fiction including historical romance, YA and historical fiction. A champion of the romance genre and its readers, she is also the author of Dangerous Books For Girls: The Bad Reputation of Romance Novels, Explained. Maya has reviewed romance for NPR Books and has appeared in Bustle, Glamour, Shondaland, Buzzfeed, The Huffington Post and PBS. She began reading romance novels in college at her mother’s insistence and has never been allowed to forget it.

P. Djeli Clark
PHENDERSON DJELI CLARK is the author of the novel A Master of Djinn, and the award-winning and Hugo, Nebula, and Sturgeon nominated author of the novellas Ring Shout, The Black God’s Drums and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. His short stories have appeared in online venues such as Tor.com, Heroic Fantasy Quarterly, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and in print anthologies including, Griots and Hidden Youth.

RJ Barker is a critically acclaimed and award-winning author of fantasy fiction. He won the 2020 British Fantasy Society (BFS) Robert Holdstock award for Best Novel for his fourth novel, The Bone Ships. RJ lives in Leeds with his wife, son and a collection of questionable taxidermy, odd art, scary music and more books than they have room for. He grew up reading whatever he could get his hands on, and has always been ‘that one with the book in his pocket.’ Having played in rock bands before deciding he was a rubbish musician, RJ returned to his first love, fiction.

SYLVAIN NEUVEL dropped out of high school at age 15. Along the way, he has been a journalist, worked in soil decontamination, sold ice cream in California, and furniture across Canada. He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago. He taught linguistics in India, and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. He writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course). His debut, Sleeping Giants, was described by NPR as “one of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory.”
