The Pixel Project is the brainchild of Regina Yau in response to a cry for help from Malaysia’s Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) when the global financial crisis created their financial crisis starting in late 2008 as donors and funders rescinded, froze or reduced.
After 2 months of brainstorming, the idea came to Regina in early January 2009 in the shower (yes – the shower! Archimedes was really on to something!), resulting in Regina rushing out to call WAO to pitch the idea.
A 5 minute conversation, 2 hours and a 15-page proposal later, The Pixel Project was born.
For the full story, go here and here.
Regina agreed to run the project in aid of WAO on one condition – that WAO shared the funds with another Violence Against Women non-profit organisation in another country, preferably the USA as the project aimed to raise US$1 million in funds.
WAO agreed and 5 months and many long-distance phone calls later, the project found its US partner – the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).
Since its inception, the project has gathered – and continues to gather – a formidable grassroots team of volunteers spread across 4 continents, 12 timezones and over 10 cities.
Our volunteers and supporters include women’s rights activists, stay-at-home mums, Nobel Prize Winners, lawyers, copywriters, web designers, graduate students, PR professionals, professional photographers, media professionals, graphic designers and others.
As you are reading this and browsing through this website, we continue to write our history – our story – as we are just getting started.
We hope you will get on board and get stuck in – it’s going to be an interesting ride!
